The Crayfish:
This crustacean has a hard exoskeleton that protects and supports the body. The crayfish has 8 jointed walking legs, a segmented body, 2 pairs of sensory antennae, and compound eyes. It has 2 large pincers or claws called chelipeds using gills, a crayfish breathes oxygen.
Crayfish belong to the Kingdom Animalia which includes all organisms that must consume their food and are multicellular. Within this kingdom are subgroups, known as phyla. The crayfish belongs to the Phylum Arthropoda, which includes organisms that have an exoskeleton, jointed appendages and segmented bodies. In fact, the word arthropoda means joint-foot.

Feeding:
A crayfish’s main diet should be comprised of sinking shrimp pellets, but they also enjoy some green vegetables and frozen foods in their diet. They are not picky when it comes to green vegetables and can be offered cabbage leafs, zucchini medallions and shelled peas. As for frozen foods, they happily accept small portions of frozen fish, daphnia, bloods worms and brine shrimp.

Lifestages:
- The process is called molting
- Reaches adult size in 3-4 months
- Life span is 3-8 years long
- They grow old quickly
- The crayfish will either mate and start the process over again, or it will die.
Ecosystem:
Crayfish play an importan role in aquatic ecosystem ponds, lakes, streams, marshes, by serving as a preferred food item for a large number of aquatic and terrestrial animals. Most crayfish are not active predators and have difficulty capturing fast moving animals.
